Increasing Access to Care in Rural NC

I have enjoyed working as the Farmworker Health Program Coordinator at Jones County Health Department for the past couple of years. However, in order to effectively represent the population that I serve, my language skills must be improved, which is why I am going to language school. My work has been supported by the North Carolina Farmworker Health Program (NCFHP), and has allowed me to reach out to the rural, underserved population of migrant and seasonal farmworkers in Jones and surrounding counties. It is only through building a good team that this mission has been accomplished. In this photo my co-worker and Outreach Nurse, Carrie, and I are pictured next to a mobile clinic. We have been blessed to have a collaborative relationship with Dr. Mark Heffington of Vecinos, Inc. who sees patients in the mobile clinic, which has greatly increased access to care. Gearing up to Go...

I booked my flight to Nicaragua today. I am very excited to start advanced language training and so thankful to Rotary International, as well as the New Bern Breakfast Rotary. I am looking forward to learning more Spanish so that I can better serve the Latino population of NC. I will be posting pictures and updates of my travels as I am able to do so. Although I have been to Nicaragua on medical missions, I have only visited the capital city of Managua and a small city that borders Honduras; Somotillo. This time I will be going to Granada, Nicaragua. Here is the school that I will attend: http://www.casaxalteva.org/about-casa-xalteva/index.html
Thank you Rotarians for such an awesome opportunity.
